Ideally, kids should have an initial orthodontic screening at age 7.
What makes early treatment, so important?
- To identify protruded front teeth and reduce the risk of trauma.
- Correct oral habits that may be affecting your child’s teeth and/or jaw.
- Guide jaw growth
- Optimize facial appearance later in life
- Assist permanent teeth into a better position
- Improve speech, bite and the way lips meet
- Eliminate or reduce the need for corrective surgery as a teen or adult
- Shorten the length of any treatment needed as a teen or adult
- Around 30% of children have misaligned jaws and teeth

Expansion Appliance
Expanders are frequently used in orthodontic therapy to treat a narrow upper / lower jaw, crossbite, impacted teeth, minor crowding. There are two types – fixed and removable.
It should be performed ideally between ages 7-12 to achieve a more predictable result. Because of this limited window of opportunity, it is important to evaluate your child’s jaw relationship early.

Functional Appliance
These are appliances used to bring the retarded lower jaw forward during growth period.
Functional appliances are of two types – Removable & Fixed.
- Removable functional appliance should be given ideally between 8-13 years.
- Fixed functional appliance can be given between 13-16 years.

Head Gears
Sometimes braces alone are not enough to move teeth into a better position to correct a problematic jaw growth. In those situations, the use of special appliances, such as orthodontic head gears are recommended.
Head gears are worn partly outside in the mouth and applies just enough force to correct a problematic jaw.
Types of headgear :
- Cervical-pull
- High-pull
- Reverse-pull / Facemask
